Threads Shadowban: Is It Real, and How Do You Check?

Meta doesn't call it a shadowban, but limited recommendations are real. How to check your account, the usual causes and how to tell it from a slow week.

"I think I've been shadowbanned" is one of the most common posts on Threads. Meta doesn't use the word. What it does do is limit which posts and accounts it recommends to people who don't follow you. So the feeling is real, even if the name isn't. Here's how to check, and how to tell a restriction from an ordinary slow week.

What's actually going on

Meta separates content that's allowed on the platform from content it will recommend. Under its published recommendation guidelines, a post can stay up and be visible to your followers but not be suggested to anyone else. Accounts that repeatedly post that kind of content can stop being recommended altogether, for a while.

Things that commonly lead there:

  • Posts that were removed or reported for breaking the rules
  • Engagement bait: "like if you agree", "reply YES for the link"
  • Unoriginal content: reposting other people's posts or videos as your own
  • Spam-like behaviour: the same reply pasted everywhere, mass follows and unfollows
  • Sensational or misleading claims, and some sensitive topics

How to check

  1. Look at your account status. Meta's apps have an Account status page in settings that shows removed content and whether your account can be recommended. If your Threads profile is linked to Instagram, check Instagram's too.
  2. Search for yourself from another account. Log in as a friend (or ask one) and search your username and a recent post's topic tag.
  3. Compare your reach rate. Divide views by followers for recent posts and compare with a month ago. A sudden collapse across every post is a warning sign; one weak post isn't. The reach rate calculator does the maths.

How to fix it

  1. Delete posts that break the rules or might, and appeal any removals you disagree with.
  2. Stop anything that looks automated: copy-pasted replies, follow/unfollow loops.
  3. Post original content, steadily, without bait.
  4. Give it time. Limits on recommendations are often temporary.
