Threads Hashtags: How Topic Tags Work and How to Use Them
Threads has no hashtag walls. Each post gets one topic tag. How tags work, how to pick the right one and whether they actually help your reach.
Threads handles hashtags differently from Instagram or X. Instead of a pile of hashtags, each post gets one topic tag. It turns into a link, and tapping it shows other posts on that topic. Here's how tags work and how to get the most out of yours.
How topic tags work
- One topic tag per post, up to 50 characters.
- Add it by typing # in the composer, or with the tag button.
- Tags can be more than one word, so a natural phrase like "Book Threads" works.
- The tag shows up as a link on the post, not as a string of hashtags at the end.
- People can find tagged posts through search and by tapping the tag.
Because you only get one, extra hashtags in your text won't add more topics. They just clutter the post.
Do topic tags help reach?
They help people who follow or search a topic find your post, and they tell Threads what your post is about. That's useful, especially for a new account. But a tag won't rescue a weak post, and it isn't a multiplier. Treat it as a label, not a growth hack.
How to pick the right tag
- Be specific. "Product Design" reaches people who care about it. "Design" is crowded and vague.
- Check it's alive. Search the tag first. If recent posts are a year old, nobody's reading it.
- Match the post, not your profile. Tag what this post is about, even if it's a step away from your usual topic.
- Reuse your best tags. Consistent tags help the people who like one post find the next.
Research tags before you use them
In 1Threads, the search page can search by topic tag as well as keyword, sorted by top or recent posts, so you can see what's working in a topic before you post into it.
